LIBRARY & DIGITAL LEARNING SPECIALIST- ELEMENTARY K-4

 

Job Overview:

The Swampscott Public Schools Elementary Library & Digital Learning Specialist will be responsible for performing the duties of a K-4 digital learning teacher, librarian, and instructional technology consultant for our brand new elementary school. This is 1 of 2 positions with the other filled with a veteran library/digital learning specialist with whom you will work closely with to share these responsibilities. We are excited that we are opening a brand new elementary school, so this is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity to be a new member of our team in a beautiful brand new building with an upper and lower library, a brand new collection of over 5,000 books, and new technology including a Promethean, iPads, and Chromebooks.

 The ideal candidate will ensure that students are effective users of ideas and information and will empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information.

In addition, the ideal candidate will:

  • Instill a love of learning in all students
  • Ensure equitable access to information
  • Have a strong content knowledge of the curriculum frameworks
  • Establish a positive and focused classroom learning environment for students
  • Work collaboratively toward program and district goals
  • Understand culturally responsive pedagogy and the importance of diverse representation in library materials
  • Have strong technology skills including but not limited to Google Workspace
  • Proficient in the use of ipads and chromebooks

SPS Job Responsibilities:

Curriculum & Instruction

  • Plan and deliver high quality learning that integrates curriculum from the Massachusetts Digital Literacy & Computer Science Standards
    • Develop and maintain resources appropriate to the curriculum, the learners, and instructional strategies of the school community
    • Focus on parts of computer science and coding while teaching critical thinking, skillful research, and the ability to synthesize and evaluate information.
    • Support the social and emotional needs of students through positive relationship building, appropriate support, and engaging instruction
    • Strength in designing and organizing instruction around project-based learning
  • Collaborate with the other K-12 library & digital learning specialists to establish and maintain procedures for selection, acquisition, circulation, and sharing of resources in all formats
  • Promote the ethical use of information: copyright, fair use, and licensing of intellectual property.
  • Maintain frequent and timely communication with teachers, staff, and parents with updates about expectations and curriculum

 

Library/Media Center

  • Foster a creative, flexible environment so that the school library is an essential part of the learning community
  • Provides library services and resources that meet the needs of all students and staff and support the MA Curriculum Frameworks
  • Cooperate and network with other libraries/agencies in the district and town.
  • Upkeep of the current collections in the Follett Destiny database
  • Collaborate with teachers and staff to develop curricular content that integrates library
  • media and technology skills
  • Assist SPS students, faculty, and staff in locating library resources
  • Plan, create, and update library/technology displays
  • Take initiative and work independently/collaboratively with the other librarian/digital learning specialists and technology team in the district.
  • Actively promote reading, information literacy skills, and information resource use through activities including book clubs, reading programs, reading initiatives, and other special events
  • Coordinate and oversee library parent volunteers

Technology

  • First point of contact for all K-4 iPad and Chromebook issues in the building. Be trained on simple repair techniques and the documentation process to get devices to the HS library for repair if needed.
  • Responsible for student password resets
  • Assist teachers with district software for K-4
  • Model and promote effective uses of technology for learning and teaching
  • Maintain the devices/charging carts and an inventory of technology equipment

Professionalism

  • Stay current in professional practices, educational research; maintain active professional memberships
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required

Qualifications

A highly qualified candidate will be licensed as a School Librarian in the state of Massachusetts, OR licensed as an Instructional Technology specialist OR a DLCS license. In addition, an SEI certification is preferred or must be obtained in the first year of the position.
